Why Small Businesses Stay Small

Donald Trump. Love Him. Hate him. Feel indifferent. Either way you know who he is — and so does the rest of the informed world. “The Donald” has lost fortunes larger than most of us will gain in our entire lives of earning. How has Donald become a household name that is worth billions today? Two Words: Think Big.
That is where most small businesses fail. I don’t know why I do it. Maybe I’m a closet masochist or something. But a couple of times a year I target 25-50 small businesses and send a carefully sequenced and timed series of letters explaining the possibility of improving the marketing they are already doing or expanding their small business. Talk about an exercise in futility. Most small businesses do not think big.
They have somehow convinced themselves that success will eventually come from putting out daily fires, and then the business with eventually take care of itself. They’re wrong. According to the IRS, 9 of 10 business will go belly up within five years. There’s proof the take-care-of-itself mentality doesn’t work.
What if Trump had decided two decades ago to only focus on the daily fires of running his businesses, where would he be today? Bankrupt. Just another nameless real estate speculator in the crowd. He would not have the success he has today. And he would not be enjoying the freedoms and attention he’s gained along the way.
What about you? Do you own or operate a small business? Have you taken time to assess where you are now, where you want to be, and what steps you are going to take to get you there? If not, you are thinking small. You are hindering yourself from reaching the level of success that could be yours if you were only to think big.

College and college-bound families should be looking into a unique opportunity to save tens of thousands of dollars on college costs for school year 2007-2008.

For the very first time, there’s a loophole in the 2007-2008 Free Application for Federal Student Aid, (FAFSA). As a result, families who own and control a small business and who are only required to complete the FAFSA, have a rare opportunity to capitalize on a financial aid bonanza!

I direct your attention to a provision in the Higher Education Reconciliation Act of 2005 (S. 9132), which was approved by the Senate on Dec. 31, 2005, by the House on Feb. 2, 2006, and signed into law by President Bush on Feb. 8, 2006, that states, “The net value of small businesses with not more than 100 full-time equivalent employees is excluded from the definition of assets.”

Accordingly, small business owners (parents, not students), or those who can legally set up a small business under the federal guidelines, will reap huge rewards in the form of untold thousands in financial aid previously unobtainable!

It is highly advisable to set up a C or S Corporation, LLC, or at the very least, obtain an Employer Identification Number (EIN) for a Schedule C business. In that way, the small business will have its own individual tax status. However, I recommend that a tax advisor be consulted before choosing any particular corporate entity.

529 Plan owners can benefit as well

In the financial aid formulas, students have no asset protection allowance, which means that for every dollar a student has, they lose 20 cents per year in financial aid. Parents fare far better and only lose 5.6% per year over their allowance which increases with age. Now that both 529 Pre-paid Tuition and 529 Savings Plans are considered parent assets. I recommend the following:

For 529 Plan owners, it’s a bit more complex. Those parents who own one can legally transfer the entire account value into a similar plan owned by their small business entity, but need to be aware of the downside. The transfer could trigger a taxable event, but only on the gains in the 529 Savings Plan. Once the transfer has taken place, if the beneficiary is ever changed, it could also result in a taxable event. Nonetheless, the strategy makes perfectly good sense, as the benefits far outweigh any modest income tax consequences. Go for it!

Using video conferencing is particularly pertinent for Wilson as he is able to include several staff and suppliers at any one time, although he has never got anywhere near the maximum 24 people that he could include.

He is in no doubt though that all small businesses should take up the internet phone and video calls options, although rather mischievously he hopes his competitors don’t, making their cost base significantly higher than his own!

Small businesses thinking of making the move to accept payments from customers via the internet need to seek advice before doing so, according to Tony Neate, managing director of Get Safe Online.

Research taken by the organisation reveals that 44 per cent of small businesses in the UK have been a victim of cybercrime, including internet scams, identity fraud, phishing and data theft. Of those businesses affected, more than a third (36 per cent) had suffered a computer virus and almost one in five (18 per cent) had been a victim of internet scams such as phishing, spyware or hacking in the last two years.

In such an environment, Mr Neate said that as soon as your company is responsible for handling other people’s confidential information, then new rules and regulations come in to play.

He reveals that there are now regulations that have been brought in by the credit card companies, and small business outfits probably need to have a look at those because they will likely be imposed on them as a result of taking credit card details.

The message is that if you are not an expert in relation to computers and computer security and you have your own e-commerce site or server, then you need to get advice. Furthermore, if you are taking people’s credit card details and transacting online, make sure you have listened to the correct advice.

However, Get Safe Online reveals only five per cent of small businesses have access to dedicated IT support, either internally or via an outsourced provider. Instead, many business owners have to take it upon themselves to keep up with the latest online security issues. Of those who had experienced online crime or other IT-related problems, almost a fifth (19 per cent) said they lost revenue as a result of downtime – the average figure cited as £1,540 – or an estimated £750 million in losses across the UK small business population as a whole.

Furthermore 60 per cent of small businesses said they would grind to a halt altogether if their PCs were taken down by cybercrime or IT related issues.

While businesses must look at access control, data encryption and secure password practices, as well as looking at other measures such as staff training, it’s also important to remember that by taking a few simple precautions should mean that online risks needn’t overshadow the huge benefits that the internet brings to UK businesses.

I worked in an advertising agency for 5 years and then in the advertising sales department at a radio and television station for another 4 years, and believe me, every client wanted to be on the front cover, above the fold, on during the Super Bowl, or air during rush-hour traffic.

For the bigger multi-national companies advertising was a no-brainer in many cases – it’s what they needed to do to keep up awareness of their brand and keep top-of-mind.

The answer for small business owners was a bit different. Some advertising opportunities were a good fit and made sense but many times, spending money on traditional advertising just doesn’t make sense. This is especially true if you provide your products and services to a large geographic area – not just a local location.

In reality, there are several things inherent in advertising that just do not make business and money sense for small businesses and service professionals.

1. Advertising is usually a mass medium

This means that advertising is usually aimed at everyone – it’s hard to just “talk” to a niche market with advertising. Because of the large focus of TV, radio, newspaper and magazines, small business owners can spend a lot of wasted money – advertising to people who aren’t in their niche target group.

2. Advertising is expensive

Because of the larger audience available via traditional advertising (think of all the people who watch TV and listen to the radio!), the costs associated are usually quite high. To produce, create and run a television commercial can run you in the 6 – 7 figures; ads in national magazines can costs in the tens of thousands and even radio commercials can be several thousand dollars.

3. Advertising doesn’t allow for frequent exposure

Due to the high cost of advertising and the limited space and time to purchase, it’s very expensive to advertise enough times to get noticed. We had a saying in the advertising world that you needed to have a 3+ frequency – this meant a person needed to see/hear your advertisement at least 3 times before they even barely noticed it.

In this media-saturated world we live in, where we’re bombarded with thousands and thousands of messages each day, advertising doesn’t get our attention like it did in the old days. If you can only afford to run one magazine ad or a handful of radio commercials, you’re really just throwing your money away.

4. Advertising doesn’t have the ability for strong follow-up and call-to-action

Getting someone’s attention is only the first step – you then need them to take a specific action, such as visit a website, pick up the phone, visit a location, and so on. Because many times small business owners can only afford a small ad, there isn’t the space or size to outline a clear call-to-action and next steps. Many prospects can be left not knowing what they should do next if they’re interested.

As well, follow-up is key to converting prospects into customers and the expense and lead time of advertising doesn’t allow for much follow-up at all. Again, prospective clients are lost due to advertising’s inability to provide follow-up.

Advertising has its place and can work for small businesses, but there are many more cost-effective and high-impact marketing strategies that you can employ to get a return on investment much quicker, effectively and consistently.

Starting a small business can be overwhelming if you’ve never done it before. You need a wide variety of skills for setting up and marketing your new business, especially if you choose to market online.
Before you get started though, there are several things you might want to consider. By setting a firm foundation for your business before you build it, you’re more likely to see success.
1. Find the focus of your business.
This is a primary mistake I see many small businesses make because many haven’t taken the time to really decide what is most important in their businesses. This includes determining who your customers are, what your goals are in starting a business, and what you’re trying to sell. You may also want to consider the value of your product or service for your target market, as well as how much competition you face. Although competition is good for your business, if you choose the wrong market, or you choose one that’s too competitive, like travel, you may find yourself having trouble connecting with your market at all.
The lifeblood of any business is your customers, and if you fail to connect with them, or you fail to offer an appropriate solution to their problems, you can find yourself out of business fast. Focus on the tasks in your business that will help you reach your goals and don’t waste time on things that won’t grow your business.
2. Know the value of your business.
Price is an important issue in business, but it’s not the only factor. Quality, as well as providing an appropriate solution for your customers is also important. Use what your business offers to appropriately market your business, and consider the value of your product when pricing.
If you offer physical products, the cost of making, marketing, and distributing your products is an issue. You want to make sure you correctly mark up the price of your product so that not only is it a fair price, but you also cover the cost of making your products. You should consider this BEFORE making your product.
3. Become the best in your industry.
It’s not enough to know a lot about your product or service. You want to become the expert in your field. This will bring customers to you. The way to do this is to know as much as possible about your topic, which means constant educating yourself on the latest information in your industry. You also want to provide stellar customer service. This means going the extra mile to make sure your customers are satisfied with the purchases they make. Build value into your products or services and strive for constant improvement. Word travels fast on the internet, and you want others to say positive things about your business.
4. Emphasize customer care.
There are many ways to do this. Providing FAQs not only helps you because it keeps you from answering the same questions over and over, but it also offers your customers additional information on your products.
Answering support tickets promptly, as well as issuing refunds quickly when necessary gives your business a more professional appearance, but it also shows that you are attentive to your customers’ needs. The secret to a well run customer system is to automate your systems as much as possible, especially if you sell digital products. The way to do this is to sell your products through systems that allow you to automate the sales process so the customer is immediately taken to the product. If you sell physical products, then you’ll need to process orders as quickly as possible. Just make sure you have a system in place.

Entrepreneurs know the importance of a targeted small business marketing strategy. Many make the mistake of doing what big advertisers do. Rock icon Meat Loaf is in a great commercial but the product and company selling it are easily forgotten. Learn a lesson on how not to advertise

Remember Meat Loaf (born Michael Lee Aday)? His album Bat Out of Hell, released in 1977, has sold nearly 40,000,000 copies and was on the charts for over 9 years. He is also featured in a new commercial that is running pretty frequently on TV.

The ad features Meat Loaf as a dad whose son is begging him to get him a cell phone. He’s singing about how he won’t run up the minutes. Personally, I am a fan of Meat Loaf and I like the commercial. He includes some lyrics and riffs from Paradise by the Dashboard Light, which I’ve always thought was a cool tune.

The other afternoon, I heard the commercial and started singing the tune in my head and realized I had seen the commercial several times and could not think of the company or brand of the phone! Now, I’m thinking this was a fairly expensive production because in addition to Meat Loaf, Tiffany is in the commercial and they are probably fairly expensive talent to hire.

After all of this expense, I couldn’t relate a brand or a product to the commercial! I kept an eye out for the next airing and saw it was for the AT&T GoPhone. Think of all the money spent on the ad. They did a lot of things right like using celebrity endorsements, a good tune and an entertaining spot. But it really made me wonder, why couldn’t I think of the company or the product?

What could you do differently if were considering a similar TV ad as one of your primary small business marketing tools ? For one thing, a bit more focus on the product instead of the production. You could easily think of special offers that would give prospects a reason to buy soon. I’ll bet a contest to have dinner with Meat Loaf or win a free “Bat Out of Hell” concert DVD would attract buyers. You would have a tracking mechanism to see how many inquiries and sales were generated. What if they had a toll free number, 1-800-MeatLoaf, to call and get a special offer and find out how to download the song to iTunes or even a ring-tone? The marketing folks could track response and the ROI on the ad. What if there were a contest to be in a commercial with Meat Loaf?

But instead, the focus was all on creativity and entertainment. I’ll bet the ad will even win an award but I still think ads should be written to sell the product now, not build a brand or win awards. My guess is that you can’t afford Meat Loaf in your ads but remember, when you do advertise, it’s about making money, not building your brand. Brands don’t put food on the table, sales do. When you spend money on marketing, either do it yourself of find a professional whose goal is to increase your profits and is willing to guarantee results, not just earn a commission.

The commercial may not be on TV too long but you can catch it on www.youtube.com. Search for Meat Loaf AT&T. This version is a 90 second commercial that does a better job of naming the product than the spot on TV but it still could have soooo much more potential as a source of REVENUE instead of a brand. When you think about branding as a strategy, ask yourself if you want to get your name out there or sell as much of you product or service as possible and build a strong and loyal customer list as quickly as possible.

For the small business marketing tools to add to your toolbox, go ahead and think about branding. However, your brand needs to be strong and you should strengthen it with incredible products and service or with your Unique Selling Proposition. Build your brand using marketing that creates prospects and leads. It is just as expensive to get your name out there with a compelling offer and reason for a client to buy from you now as it is to just get your name out there. The difference is the ROI. The Meat Loaf commercial offers no way to measure the ROI and small businesses can’t afford to throw scarce marketing dollars up against the wall and guess at the ROI.

Here is a powerful small business marketing tip when it comes to a brand-building strategy: If your financial planner came to you with an idea to spend $10,000 on marketing as an investment, you’d think, “What will my return be?because she is a trusted advisor. Use the same standards with your marketing, advertising and media reps. Ask the question: “What is my projected return and how does it compare to other marketing investments?When the rep tells you the value of impressions, ask for some statistics from other advertisers regarding the ROI of the ads and spots they are running?
